Why Is It So Hard for Men to Leave a Marriage of Convenience, Even When They Know There's No Love in It?

By Sanja Delić2 min read

They say men are simple. That they love without complications, think practically and follow their instincts. And yet, when it comes to a marriage love walked out of long ago, they suddenly turn into mathematicians. They add, subtract, multiply, divide - everything except subtract themselves from an equation they stopped having a place in a long time ago.

Because the truth is - love hasn't lived in their marriages for ages. But the mortgage still lives there, and so do their standing in society, the godparents, the dinners with friends, the summer holidays with the "family" for Instagram. Love may be gone, but the loyalty card perks still work.

Men in marriages like that often look like well-dressed prisoners. They have the key in their pocket, but they never use it. Why? Because freedom takes courage, and courage was the last thing they thought to pack when they moved into the "marital home."

Maybe the problem is that a marriage of convenience isn't a marriage between two people, but a marriage between a man and his comfort. And unlike a wife he doesn't love, comfort is very hard to divorce.

And so men stay in houses without love, in beds without passion and in lives without truth. But with a lovely facade. Because, at the end of the day, what the neighbors will say often matters more to them than what their heart is whispering.

And as I was thinking about all this, I wondered - do men really not know how to get out of those marriages, or are they simply too comfortable to even try?
